The Tools

The Atheme

The Atheme is a knife that is chosen by a witch for ceremonial purposes. The point and blade should always be blunted in case of accidents. It represents fire and is used for casting and banishing circles and using as a pointer to specify who or what the spell is about. It doesn't matter what the athame looks like as long as you have an affinity with it and feel comfortable. It can be made of any metal that you choose and the hilt can be of any material that feels right to you.

The Sword

The sword is also associated with fire and is mostly used in the same way as the athame, but at larger rituals and sabbats.

The Chalice

The chalice represents water and is used to hold ceremonial wines that are passed around the coven or used by the solitary witch during spellcasting.

The Wand

The Wand represents air and is used to call upon The Angels, Gods, elements and winds. The wand can be made from the wood of any tree and decorated with crystal, beads, metal, pine cones, ribbons, bells, stones, shells or anything else that seems appropriate to its use and to your taste.

The Pentacle

The Pentacle is the main symbol of Mother Earth and as such it is the centrepiece of the alter on which all objects are placed for consecration and blessings. The tools to be used to work a spell are placed within the pentacle to give more power to the spell.

The Censer

The Censer is the element of air and is used for burning incense. The incense can be of any aroma that suits the witch and is used to create an atmosphere of calm and wellbeing whils spellcasting.

The scourge

The Scourge is mainly symbolic and can be made of anything from silken cord to soft leather. There should be eight cords to the scourge and five knots tied in each of the cords. It is used mainly in chanting to help retain a constant rythym and is used lightly, not meaning to cause pain.

The Cords

Every witch needs cords of at least nine feet in length. These are used to cast some circles. The most used of the cords is the white, for purity and innocence of intention. Cords of other colours are used, more in rituals.

The Cauldron

The Cauldron is used when the spell calls for ingredients to be added to liquid, heated or a potion preparation. It is surprising how many spells can be made more potent by the use of the cauldron. It is also very useful when more advanced spells call for a greater number of ingredients.

The Broomstick

The Broomstick is used for sweeping away the circle at the close of a spell and for sweeping used ingredients back into the earth. It is also used for sweeping away negative energy and in handfasting, a type of marriage mony between witches.
